Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is your last line of defense against pesticide exposure, physical hazards, and biological risks in pest control work. While engineering controls (ventilation, closed systems) and administrative controls (training, procedures) reduce risks, PPE protects YOU directly.


**Legal Requirements:**

  • Federal law (FIFRA) and state pesticide regulations REQUIRE appropriate PPE
  • EPA pesticide labels specify minimum PPE for each product
  • OSHA regulations protect workers from occupational hazards
  • Failure to use required PPE can result in fines, license suspension, and injury

  • **Why PPE Matters:**

    Pesticide exposure can cause:

  • Acute effects: Skin irritation, eye damage, respiratory distress, poisoning
  • Chronic effects: Cancer, reproductive harm, neurological damage
  • Environmental exposure: Contaminating clothing, vehicles, homes (take-home exposure)

  • **Remember:** PPE only works when:

    1. It's the right type for the hazard

    2. It fits properly

    3. It's worn correctly and consistently

    4. It's maintained and replaced as needed

    Reading Pesticide Labels: PPE Requirements

    **The pesticide label is the law.** Always follow label instructions.


    **Where to Find PPE Requirements:**

    1. Look for the "Precautionary Statements" section

    2. Find "Hazards to Humans and Domestic Animals"

    3. Read the "Personal Protective Equipment" box


    **Label Categories and Minimum PPE:**


    **DANGER/POISON (Category I - Most Toxic):**

  • Coveralls over long-sleeved shirt and long pants
  • Chemical-resistant gloves
  • Chemical-resistant footwear + socks
  • Chemical-resistant apron (when mixing/loading)
  • Protective eyewear (goggles or face shield)
  • Chemical-resistant headgear (for overhead exposure)
  • Respirator (often required)

  • **WARNING (Category II - Moderately Toxic):**

  • Long-sleeved shirt and long pants
  • Chemical-resistant gloves
  • Shoes + socks
  • Protective eyewear (if specified)

  • **CAUTION (Category III - Slightly Toxic):**

  • Minimum: Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes, socks
  • May require gloves and eyewear depending on product

  • **General Use Products (Category IV):**

  • Follow label directions (often minimal PPE)
  • Good practice: Gloves and long clothing even when not required

  • **Special Statements:**

  • "Mix/Load in Enclosed Cab or Use Respiratory Protection"
  • "Do not apply by hand"
  • "Restricted Entry Interval" (REI) - workers must stay out of treated area

  • **Example Label PPE Statement:**

    "Applicators and other handlers must wear: Long-sleeved shirt and long pants, chemical-resistant gloves made of any waterproof material, shoes plus socks, and protective eyewear."


    **Always exceed label requirements when:**

  • Working in confined spaces
  • High temperatures (increased dermal absorption)
  • Windy conditions
  • Your health conditions warrant extra protection

    **Types of Chemical-Resistant Gloves:**


    **Nitrile:**

  • Best for: Most pesticides, oils, solvents
  • Pros: Puncture-resistant, good dexterity, affordable
  • Cons: Not for chlorinated solvents
  • Common uses: General pest control, most applications

  • **Neoprene:**

  • Best for: Acids, bases, alcohols, pesticides
  • Pros: Flexible, chemical-resistant
  • Cons: More expensive
  • Common uses: Heavy-duty mixing, corrosive materials

  • **Butyl Rubber:**

  • Best for: Strong acids, fumigants, highly toxic chemicals
  • Pros: Excellent chemical resistance
  • Cons: Thick, reduced dexterity, expensive
  • Common uses: Fumigation, hazardous material handling

  • **PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride):**

  • Best for: Water-based formulations, moderate chemicals
  • Pros: Affordable, easy to clean
  • Cons: Not for strong solvents
  • Common uses: General mixing, light-duty work

  • **NOT Chemical-Resistant:**

    ❌ Leather gloves (absorb chemicals)

    ❌ Cotton gloves (absorb and hold chemicals against skin)

    ❌ Regular rubber gloves (household cleaning gloves - too thin)


    **Proper Use:**

    1. **Inspect before each use**: Holes, tears, excessive wear

    2. **Size matters**: Too small = tears; too large = reduced dexterity

    3. **Double-glove** for highly toxic materials (nitrile under neoprene)

    4. **Barrier cream**: Apply before gloving for added protection

    5. **Wash outside** of gloves before removing (avoid contaminating hands)

    6. **Remove carefully**: Peel off without touching outside surface

    7. **Wash hands** immediately after glove removal


    **When to Replace:**

  • After mixing/loading 8-10 times (disposable nitrile)
  • Any visible damage (holes, stiffness, discoloration)
  • Annually for reusable gloves
  • Immediately if contaminated inside

  • **Storage:**

  • Store away from sunlight and heat
  • Keep separate from contaminated clothing
  • Disposable gloves: Use once, discard properly
  • Protective Clothing and Coveralls

    **Clothing Basics:**

    Minimum for most applications: Long-sleeved shirt, long pants, shoes, socks


    **Coveralls:**

    **When Required:**

  • Mixing/loading concentrated pesticides
  • Label specifies "coveralls"
  • Overhead application
  • High-risk applications

  • **Types:**

    1. **Disposable Tyvek-style**: Single use, lightweight, breathable

    2. **Reusable chemical-resistant**: Washable, durable, often rubberized

    3. **Breathable chemical-resistant**: Gore-Tex style, more comfortable


    **Proper Fit:**

  • Not too tight (restricts movement, tears easily)
  • Not too loose (snags, dips into chemicals)
  • Covers wrists and ankles
  • Zippers/closures secure

  • **Chemical-Resistant Aprons:**

  • Required for mixing/loading
  • Covers front of body
  • Rubber or PVC material
  • Tie securely, don't let dangle

  • **Boots and Footwear:**

  • Chemical-resistant (rubber or neoprene boots)
  • Cover ankles (no low-top sneakers)
  • Cleanable (no canvas or leather)
  • Dedicated to work (don't wear home)

  • **What NOT to Wear:**

    ❌ Canvas or leather (absorbs chemicals)

    ❌ Shorts or short sleeves

    ❌ Open-toed shoes, sandals

    ❌ Loose jewelry (can catch, hold chemicals)


    **Layering Tip:**

    In hot weather, wear lightweight moisture-wicking base layer under coveralls. Change wet clothing immediately (sweat increases dermal absorption).


    **Contaminated Clothing:**

  • Remove immediately after work
  • Wash separately from household laundry
  • Hot water + detergent, double rinse
  • If heavily contaminated, dispose as hazardous waste
  • Never wear contaminated clothing home (take-home exposure risk)
  • Respiratory Protection

    **When Is a Respirator Required?**

    1. Pesticide label specifies respiratory protection

    2. Working in enclosed/poorly ventilated spaces

    3. Applying fumigants or highly volatile pesticides

    4. Mixing/loading concentrated materials

    5. Entering treated areas during REI


    **Types of Respirators:**


    **Half-Face Air-Purifying Respirator (Most Common):**

  • Covers nose and mouth
  • Cartridge filters remove pesticide vapors
  • Must be fit-tested and properly sealed
  • NIOSH-approved for pesticides (look for TC number)

  • **Full-Face Air-Purifying Respirator:**

  • Covers entire face
  • Provides eye protection
  • Better seal, higher protection factor
  • Required for highly toxic materials

  • **Powered Air-Purifying Respirator (PAPR):**

  • Battery-powered fan
  • More comfortable (no breathing resistance)
  • Better protection for longer periods
  • Expensive

  • **Cartridge Selection:**

    Pesticide labels specify cartridge type (usually combination):

  • **Organic Vapor (OV)**: For most pesticides
  • **P100 Particulate**: For dusts, wettable powders
  • **Combo OV/P100**: Most versatile for pest control
  • **Ammonia/Methylamine**: For fumigants

  • **CRITICAL: Cartridge Change Schedule**

  • Replace when you smell pesticides (break-through)
  • Replace after label-specified hours of use (usually 8-40 hours)
  • Replace if breathing becomes difficult
  • Mark date installed on cartridge

  • **Fit Testing (Required Annually):**

  • Professional fit test OR
  • User seal check before each use (positive/negative pressure test)
  • Facial hair prevents proper seal (must be clean-shaven)

  • **Maintenance:**

  • Clean after each use (warm soapy water)
  • Dry completely
  • Store in clean, sealed container
  • Inspect straps, valves, seals regularly

  • **NOT a Respirator:**

    ❌ Dust masks (N95) - Not for pesticide vapors

    ❌ Surgical masks - No protection

    ❌ Bandanas or cloth - No protection

    Eye and Face Protection

    **When Required:**

  • Label specifies protective eyewear
  • Risk of splash or spray
  • Mixing/loading
  • Overhead application
  • Windy conditions

  • **Types:**


    **Safety Glasses with Side Shields:**

  • Minimum for low-risk applications
  • ANSI Z87.1 rated
  • Side shields prevent splash from sides

  • **Goggles:**

  • Full seal around eyes
  • Best for mixing, loading, high-risk applications
  • Ventilated (to reduce fogging) or non-ventilated (for vapors)

  • **Face Shield:**

  • Full face protection
  • MUST be worn over safety glasses or goggles (not alone)
  • Best for mixing concentrated chemicals
  • Prevents splash to face, neck

  • **Full-Face Respirator:**

  • Provides both eye and respiratory protection
  • Best option for highly toxic materials in enclosed spaces

  • **Proper Use:**

  • Clean lenses before use (dirty lenses = reduced visibility)
  • Adjust straps for secure, comfortable fit
  • Don't touch face/eyes with contaminated gloves
  • Keep spare eyewear in truck

  • **Anti-Fog Tips:**

  • Use anti-fog spray or wipes
  • Ensure proper ventilation
  • Don't overtighten goggles
  • Clean regularly

  • **Contact Lenses:**

    Controversial - some experts say:

  • OK if wearing goggles (full seal)
  • NOT OK if risk of gas/vapor exposure (can trap chemicals)
  • Never rely on contacts as eye protection

  • **Emergency:**

    If chemicals contact eyes:

    1. Remove contacts immediately if worn

    2. Flush eyes with clean water for 15 minutes

    3. Hold eyelids open

    4. Seek medical attention

    5. Bring pesticide label/MSDS

    PPE Maintenance, Storage, and Decontamination

    **After Each Use:**


    **Gloves:**

  • Wash outside with soap and water BEFORE removing
  • Peel off carefully (avoid touching outside)
  • Inspect for damage
  • Hang to dry (if reusable)
  • Store in clean area

  • **Coveralls/Clothing:**

  • Remove BEFORE entering vehicle or home
  • Shake outside to remove dust/residue
  • Wash separately from family laundry
  • Use hot water, heavy-duty detergent, double rinse
  • Hang to dry or tumble dry low
  • Inspect for tears, stains, wear

  • **Respirators:**

  • Remove cartridges/filters
  • Wash facepiece in warm soapy water
  • Rinse thoroughly
  • Dry completely
  • Reassemble and store in sealed bag/container
  • Keep away from sunlight and chemicals

  • **Boots:**

  • Rinse outside thoroughly
  • Scrub with brush and soapy water
  • Dry completely
  • Store away from pesticides

  • **Storage Best Practices:**

  • Dedicated storage area (separate from pesticides)
  • Clean, dry, ventilated space
  • Out of direct sunlight
  • Away from household items
  • Never store in personal vehicle

  • **When to Replace PPE:**


    **Immediately:**

  • Any visible damage (tears, holes, cracks)
  • Chemical contamination inside gloves/clothing
  • Respirator fails fit test
  • Persistent chemical odor (can't be cleaned out)

  • **Regularly:**

  • Gloves: After 8-10 uses (disposable) or annually (reusable)
  • Coveralls: When worn, stained, or damaged
  • Respirator cartridges: Per label or when smell detected
  • Respirator facepiece: Every 2-3 years (or per manufacturer)
  • Boots: Annually or when cracked/damaged

  • **Disposal:**

  • Contaminated disposable PPE = hazardous waste
