The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has announced updates to pesticide applicator licensing requirements. All commercial applicators must be aware of these changes:
- Core certification: Now requires 6 hours (up from 4)
- Category-specific: 4 hours (unchanged)
- Must include 2 hours on IPM methods
- Online courses now count toward CE credits
- Renewals now processed online through PA Department of Ag portal
- Renewal window extended to 90 days before expiration
- Late renewals subject to $50 penalty (new)
- Delinquent licenses over 90 days require retesting
Pennsylvania now has a separate category for structural fumigation (previously included under 7a).
- Requires specialized training
- Additional insurance requirements
- Annual reporting mandated
All new applicants must complete enhanced background checks including:
- PA state criminal history
- Child abuse clearance
- FBI fingerprinting (for certain categories)
Minimum liability insurance increased:
- General liability: $500,000 (up from $300,000)
- Pollution liability: $1,000,000 (new requirement for categories 7a, 7b, 7c)
Current license holders have until December 31, 2025, to comply with new insurance requirements. CE hour changes apply to renewals after January 1, 2025.
